The Skinny on The Stigma of “Self-Published”

The skinny on the stigma of being “self-published” is that there is no stigma.

Torre DeRoche, the writer behind the blog, “The Fearful Adventurer,” landed three publishing contracts and a movie deal for her self-published book titled, “Love with a Chance of Drowning.”

Her book, self-published in September 2011, took DeRoche from blogger to superstar in the publishing arena in just two short months. It will be coming out in the US, NZ and the UK in June 2013.

DeRoche, an accidental “adventurer,” wrote a book about her journey home from San Francisco to Australia with the man she fell in love with, “I had no intention of getting myself into a relationship, but by mistake I fell for a 31-year old Argentinean man who had a humble sailboat and a dream to set off exploring the world.”

Her high-seas adventure led her to start her blog:

“Lured by the South Pacific islands – which would act as stepping stones between the US and Australia – I swallowed my fear and jumped aboard. I was 26 at that time. Somewhere mid-Pacific, I found myself adrift in a storm on a leaky sailboat struggling to keep an old boat, a new relationship, and my floundering sanity afloat …

And so, the Fearful Adventurer was born.”

Self-publishing no longer a stigma

It just goes to show you how far we’ve come from the days when authors would never dream of self-publishing to self-publishing as a way to find a big name publisher. It also illustrates the power of blogging to build an audience and establish a platform before your book comes out; something publishers pay a great deal of attention to.

It should give hope to many writers who dream of that big publishing deal. Publishers are watching and looking at self-published authors.

Now is the time to write your book for there has never been a more opportune time to self-publish.
